10 Feb The Evolution of MG
It’s interesting how race planning evolves, especially in the first 2 years. New ideas are bouncing around constantly with our crew. For Mad Gravel, it’s been a whirlwind of scenarios. Phone calls and discussions, often at the local brewpub, turn into creating new events that are unique, challenging, and hopefully fun. As our mantra goes, we only want to create events in which we would want to participate in ourselves. Our entire crew is made up of a bunch of cycling enthusiasts after all.
Mad Gravel 2022 has been through many iterations, and we think we’ve finalized a great schedule over Memorial Day weekend. We don’t know of many gravel events where you get to try your hand at a circuit race the day before the big event. In scouting out our mountain bike course last November, we thought portions of that course would be perfect for a gravel circuit. And with a circuit race already set up, how about starting the weekend with a trail run? And, since we have 3 days to work with, let’s get the MGXC mountain bike race going on Monday. Why? Because we can. At this point, we’re realizing we have some great events on one of the biggest weekends of the year, in a beautiful and sometimes forgotten part of Colorado, with tons of camping opportunities. Mad Gravel has quickly turned into a festival, and we’ve already secured a band for Saturday night! Who knows what other ideas we’ll come up with in the next few months to add to the weekend calendar of events.
